Defining the Next Decade: Gender Equality
On May 15, we discussed best ways to reach gender equality in Los Angeles and beyond.
Our distinguished speakers presented some of their experience and insights in a panel followed by a moderated discussion that will touch on three aspects of gender equality:
- Different expressions of gender inequality
- Examples of successful strategies to achieve gender equality in different fields and contexts
- Creating conditions for gender equality in the next decade
This event was part of a series led by Global Shapers Los Angeles and sponsored by Google.
HALLIE APPLEBAUM is the Founder of Future of Women, which creates original multimedia content by and about women from around the world, empowering them to act on their dreams. She began her career at Wells Fargo Advisors before moving to the World Bank to advise policymakers at national governments in the Middle East and Latin America on developing programs that support creativity and entrepreneurship in cities.
EMILY BEST is a film producer and entrepreneur known as founder and CEO of crowdfunding platform Seed&Spark and producer of the 2010 film Like the Water. Seed&Spark allows to make movies in a healthier environment and combines the benefits of subscription streaming for audiences with the career-building power of crowdfunding for creators.
LILIANA MONGE is a social entrepreneur that believes in the power of the <script> tag. Throughout her career, she has been driven to help people become exceptional technical professionals, and is the heart and soul behind Sabio, a tight-knit community that goes way beyond a coding program.
MACEO PAISLEY is a Los Angeles Global Shaper, multi-disciplinary artist, designer, and cultural producer who explores themes in society and identity through movement, language, and imagery. He is the founder and executive director of Citizens Of Culture, a non-profit organization that uses arts and media to develop critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and combat resource inequity.
MIKI REYNOLDS is the Executive Director of Grid110, an early stage startup accelerator and community development non-profit she co-founded in 2014. Miki has accepted commendations from Mayor Eric Garcetti on behalf of General Assembly and Grid110, has been recognized by LA Biz Journal as a 2017 Woman of Influence, and was most recently named to Techweek’s 100.
SCHENAE ROURK is President of the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners, Chair of Metro's Transportation Business Advisory Council and Co-chair of the Small Business and Labor Workforce Committee at BizFed. She has served contributed to encouraging and supporting initiatives for women-owned businesses in contracting opportunities at Metro LA and has a passion in assisting underprivileged youth in gaining educational opportunities.
CLAIRE SCHMIDT is the CEO and Founder of AllVoices, an online platform that gives everyone the ability to report workplace issues, including harassment, discrimination, and bias. Her career has mainly focused on using technology to create positive social change. Claire is a Los Angeles Global Shaper alumna.
